- 1995 elected Councillor and Vice-President of the Regional Government with responsibility for the budget;
- 1999 elected as Member of the European Parliament;
- 2000 elected President of the Region of Puglia;
- 2005/2006 elected Councillor of Puglia Regional Government;
- 2006 elected Member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament;
- 2008 elected Member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament and Minister of Regional Affairs and Local Authorities in the Berlusconi government;
- 2010 is delegated as Minister for Cohesion Policies;
- 2013 elected Member of the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament;
- 2014 elected Member of the European Parliament;
- 2019 elected Member of the European Parliament;
- 2019 Co-Chairman in the European Parliament of the European Conservatives & Reformists Group (ECR);
- 2022 Minister for European Affairs, Southern Italy, Cohesion Policies and the NRRP.
